Introducing Othonna capensis ‘Ruby Necklace’, a fast-growing trailing succulent with slender stems and small bean-shaped leaves that change from soft green to deeper ruby tones in bright light.
It’s one I’ve been using a lot lately in my arrangements for that gentle pop of colour and soft movement, slightly wild, but still easy to work with. It has a lovely texture and natural flow that brings everything together.
Care Tips:
Light: Loves bright light, more light brings out the deeper purple tones.
Water: Let the soil dry out fully before watering. It prefers dry conditions, and too much water can lead to root rot. Like most succulents, it stores water in its leaves, so it’s better to water less.
Propagation: Very easy! Take a small cutting, let it dry for a day or two, then place into well-draining soil, it will root quickly.

Fun Facts:
– Often linked to good luck and prosperity because of its ruby tones
– It can also produce small, daisy-like yellow flowers, usually in the cooler months
– May grow soft white tufts near the leaves, which can look like mealybugs, but this is completely normal
– Popular Common Names: String of Rubies, Little Pickles, String of Pickles, Sigetu (in Japan)
– Pet safe, so a gentle choice for homes with animals
Have a little browse through my arrangements to see how this one adds a soft, trailing feel and a touch of colour
